Tail bone pain is also known as coccydynia. It is the end part of vertebral
column in which pain persists on prolonged sitting and due to many
other reasons.
CAUSES
• It can be caused due to any trauma
• Prolonged sitting
• Prolonged standing
• Sitting to standing
• Degenerative disc disease
• Difficult childbirth
• Dislocation or break of coccyx due to trauma
• obesity
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
• Pain around the coccyx bone
• Back pain that can be radiating or non-radiating
• Tenderness on palpation
• Swelling also is seen
• Stiffness around the coccyx bone
• Discomfort
• Pain gets increased on sitting
• Pain increases from sitting to standing
RISK FACTORS
• Gender: a female are more commonly affected than male
• Obesity
• Tumor
• Arthritis
TREATMENT
Ergonomic adjustment such as to teach proper postural education.
• Individuals should be taught about correct sitting posture
• Use of coccidia cushions
• Stretching and mobilizing the area
• Stretching of iliopsoas and piriformis
• Ice application if swelling is present
• Sleep on the sides instead of sleeping on the back to reduce stress on
tailbone
• Pelvic floor strengthening exercises
• Hot pack can be used if swelling is reduced
• Knee-to-chest exercises
PRECAUTIONS
• Avoid sitting on hard surfaces
• Prolong sitting to be avoided
• Try to put equal weight on both the sides
• Stop wearing clothes that are tight on the waist area
• Prolong standing should be avoided
When to see a doctor
If the pain has not subsided after intake of painkillers and the home care
treatment in a few days.
