DE QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS

Also called de Quervain’s thumb. It is a condition of the wrist in which
the tendons get affected on the thumb side. Tendons get swelled up
those are inserted into the thumb.


CAUSES
• Constant use of wrist
• Arthritis
• Occupations such as gardening, racket sports
• Grasping things
• Continuous use of hammer


SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
• Pain over the thumb, side of the thumb
• Tenderness
• Swelling
• Radiating pain in the wrist and arm
• Grasping or gripping movements are difficult
• Popping sensations run in the wrist
• Restricted movements


RISK FACTORS
• Age: occur in the age group of 30-50, can also be seen in children
• Gender: more likely to occur in females
• Pregnancy
• Occupation: that involves repetitive movements of the wrist and
thumb
• Baby care

When to see a doctor
when the pain gets worsens, numbness and unable to do daily
routine activities.


TREATMENT
• Opposition: keep your palm straight and touch your thumb to
the base of the little finger
• Wrist extension stretch
• Grip strengthening
• Thumb flexion
• Rubber band stretch
• Wrist extension with dumbbell
• Splints


PRECAUTIONS
• Avoid repetitive movements at the thumb
• Taking break in between activities
• Avoid heavy weight lifting
• Reduce stress on the wrist
