PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME

This condition is also called fat wallet syndrome. In this condition, the piriformis muscle that is located in the buttocks gets spasmed or tight. The corresponding gluteal muscles also become weakened

CAUSES

  • Pain in the gluteal region that may radiate to the back of the thigh and leg
  • Spasm in piriformis muscle
  • Injury can cause spasms
  • Swelling of muscle
  • Chronic pain in the hip region
  • Repetitive exercise
  • Stair climbing repeatedly

SINGS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Pain from sitting to standing
  • Swelling
  • Sometimes pain can radiate into the legs
  • Numbness

RISK FACTORS

  • Long sitting
  • Sciatica
  • Lower body workout
  • Trauma to gluteal muscle

TREATMENT

  • Applying ice packs and hot pack
  • Piriformis stretch
  • TENS
  • Myofascial release

PREVENTION

  • Regular exercises
  • Avoid prolonged sitting
  • Avoid running and sports for a while
  • To avoid stair climbing for a while
  • To maintain correct posture
