Tennis elbow is also known as lateral epicondylitis. It is a condition that occurs because of overworked elbow movements due to which the elbow gets inflamed that may lead to degeneration. In it pain can also radiate in forearm and wrist. It is most common in athletes.
CAUSES
The repetitive movements of the elbow can cause the tendon and muscle pull at elbow which causes pain.
In athletes-tennis players, badminton etc.
Due to household work such as brooming
Excessive use of roller in kitchen
Painting
Cutting with knife
Plumbing
Carpentry
Driving
RISK FACTORS
Mostly seen in age group of 30-50
Occupational such as in carpenters ,painters ,plumbers etc
Sports activity
Repetitive use of mouse on computers
Excessive use of screw drivers
Due to strenuous activity
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
pain
inflammation
tenderness
restricted range of motion
difficulty in doing daily activites
pain during hand shake
weak gripping
muscles weakness
pain on touch
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
When pain is unbearable and affects the daily routine activities and pain is not subsiding even after home care, and after painkillers.
TREATMENT
Main point of the treatment is to subside the pain first, that includes-
icing on elbow and pain area for 10-12 minutes covering the complete area in parts for 2-3 minutes on one area.
Anti-inflammatory drugs can be taken to subside the pain
Use of elbow strap to protect the area of pain.
Once the pain settles exercise should be started that includes following-
exercises- wrist stretch
Triceps stretch
Ball squeeze
Finger stretch with rubber bands
PRECAUTIONS
Patient is advised to avoid repetitive movements of elbow that may increase pain.
Avoid heavy weight lifting with the affected arm.
Avoid sleeping on the affected side.
Give rest to the affected elbow.
If pain is increased or you feel any discomfort while doing exercises, stop doing them.
